Veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami has not played for the Indian cricket team since the Champions Trophy in 2025. Despite being the highest wicket-taker in the ODI World Cup 2023 and performing well in domestic cricket, Shami did not feature in the BCCI selectors’ plans in the recent past. He claimed 37 wickets in 7 Ranji Trophy matches last season and followed it up with 15 wickets in 7 Vijay Hazare Trophy matches. However, Shami has not given up on his hopes of playing for India once again and childhood coach Mohammed Badruddin revealed that he has lost five kgs since last season.
“Shami’s mood is positive. He is quite motivated for the next season,” Badruddin told India Today.
“He still has cricket left. He is ready, and if the country needs him, he will be ready to serve,” he added.
Indian pacers like Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna struggled with injuries recently and even a newcomer like Gurnoor Brar struggled to perform well in England. Badruddin pointed out that overseas conditions can be tricky for many pacers and India can benefit from Shami’s experience during the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.
“India did not bowl well in England, where the fast bowlers get a lot of help. Shami could have been really useful there. It is not easy to bowl in South Africa. You need experience there,” he said.
Earlier, Shami praised Ajinkya Rahane‘s career, highlighting his class, discipline and commitment to the national team.
“A career built on class, discipline, and unwavering commitment comes to a close. Thank you for every run, every fight, and every unforgettable moment in the Indian jersey. Wishing you success in the next chapter. @ajinkyarahane,” Shami wrote while sharing an Instagram story after Rahane announced his retirement from all formats of cricket.
