AIFF expected to take a final call soon, as October 3’s blockbuster against Brazil creates a fixture clash
The announcement of India vs Brazil in Kolkata on October 3, 2026, has sent Indian football into a frenzy.
Within minutes of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirming the fixture, social media was flooded with reactions as fans celebrated the prospect of watching the five-time FIFA World Cup winners take on the Blue Tigers on Indian soil for the first time.
However, while the glamour friendly has generated unprecedented excitement, it is also set to have its first major casualty.
Khel Now understands that India are likely to withdraw from the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 because of the scheduling conflict with the Brazil friendly and FIFA not allowing India to play with the U-23 team or B team, with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) expected to take a final decision later today.
The Blue Tigers had been drawn in Division 1 Group A alongside Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, with the tournament scheduled during the same September-October FIFA international window.
The Brazil friendly, meanwhile, is expected to become one of the biggest and most expensive matches ever organised by the AIFF. The federation is understood to be working on a financial package worth ₹60-70 crore, combining sponsorship revenue, ticket sales and support from the Government of West Bengal to bring the five-time world champions to Kolkata.
“Several stakeholders believe the Brazil friendly could become a major campaign talking point for Kalyan Chaubey ahead of the next AIFF presidential election, should the match go ahead as planned,” said a source tracking the developments.
Bhaichung Bhutia opposes withdrawal
Khel Now understands that former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia strongly opposed the proposal to withdraw from the FIFA ASEAN Cup during the AIFF Executive Committee meeting held earlier today.
“I strongly insisted that the first team should go and play the FIFA ASEAN Cup. It is a much better competition than the SAFF Championship. Financially, you are also getting a participation fee and, if you do well, there is good prize money to be won. More importantly, it is great for the team’s development. Three or four competitive matches are far more beneficial for the players. It’s a good tournament to play,” Bhaichung Bhutia told Khel Now.
Bhutia is believed to have argued that the tournament would have provided valuable international exposure for India’s young players and helped the national team prepare for future continental competitions.
“Brazil is Brazil, and it’s great to play them. But the timing is wrong. You’re playing just one match. What are you going to gain from it in terms of the long-term development of the national team?” added Bhutia
FIFA ASEAN Cup offered long-term value
While the Brazil friendly will undoubtedly be a historic occasion for Indian football, the FIFA ASEAN Cup represented something entirely different.
India were guaranteed three competitive international matches against Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, teams the Blue Tigers regularly encounter in AFC Asian Cup qualification campaigns and could also face during the road to the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
For a national team entering a rebuilding phase under Khalid Jamil, those fixtures would have offered an opportunity to test younger players, build squad chemistry and gain meaningful competitive experience against opponents of a similar level.
Unlike a one-off glamour friendly, the ASEAN Cup could have served as an important stepping stone in preparing the next generation of Indian footballers for future qualification campaigns.
