Farming simulator games deliver on an escapist fantasy: going off-grid from the modern work grind, in exchange for charming small-town life and a farm to call your own. While these games have had dedicated fans since the days of Harvest Moon, the most popular today, Stardew Valley, contemporised the genre with a larger range of activities and lovable townspeople to befriend and romance. Created in 2016 by independent developer Eric Barone, it has now sold more than 50m copies and become the mould for so many other indie farming sims.
Fields of Mistria is one of these farming sims in a post–Stardew world – though it updates the core formula. Created by independent developer NPC Studio, Fields of Mistria has already proven popular: it debuted in early access (a pre-release version of the game meant for early players to find bugs and give feedback) for PC players on Steam in August 2024, and in the first month the game racked up more than 4m player hours. It’s for a good reason: Mistria satisfies all of those same farming sim desires but with more expansive character creation and a story steeped in magic.
What is Fields of Mistria?
Fields of Mistria is a farming and life simulator game with fantasy themes. You play as the new farmer in Mistria, a lovable small town in recovery from an earthquake, whose inhabitants hope you’ll fulfil their requests for various produce and supplies. Over the four seasons you grow crops, raise barn animals and attend events: from regular Saturday markets to the annual Shooting Star festival. Choose between a cat or a dog as a pet and accumulate toys and accessories for all your animals. My personal favourite is watching a duck and a rabbit play together on a seesaw.
You’ll repair structures and buildings in town, such as the bridge or the Sleeping Dragon Inn. Donate supplies and funds, raise your renown level and town rank, and restore Mistria to its former glory. Along the way you’ll make friends with the townspeople: like Ryis the carpenter, who is shockingly quick at those repairs, or Hayden, the owner of Sweetwater Farm who has a haughty prize-winning chicken called Henrietta (and yes, you can befriend her, too).
You can also fish, catch bugs and explore the mines; just be careful about selling anything immediately, because you might want to hold on to it to donate to the museum, or use it to craft cute furniture for your home. Your character evolves along with you: the more you do, the more you’ll be able to level up skills such as cooking, ironmongery, and archaeology.
How is Fields of Mistria different from Stardew Valley?
Fields of Mistria may sound like a classic farming sim – but there’s a twist: you gain magical powers, thanks to the mysterious dragon Caldarus, who you can talk to by visiting a shrine on your farm. One spell lets you create rain, so you don’t have to painstakingly water all of your crops. Another lets you fully restore stamina, so you can get back to fishing for that golden eel. It seems the earthquake may have unearthed some unexpected parts of Mistria’s history.
And while Stardew Valley – despite its lauded queer relationship options – has thus far only offered two choices for gender expression, in Mistria, character gender options also include “they/them”, “she/they,” “he/they,” and more.
There are also some great accessibility features. In particular, you can make a day longer by slowing down time, giving yourself a truly leisurely pace to play. It’s an antidote to how frantic Stardew Valley can feel, especially during special events when you’re trying to pack as much into a day as you can.

Are there romance-friendly characters in Fields of Mistria?
Mistria is full of potential suitors, and you can woo any eligible villager regardless of gender. There’s Juniper, the sorceress who owns the local bathhouse, and who wouldn’t look out of place with the cast of Sailor Moon. Or maybe you’d like to romance March, the grumpy blacksmith who is a tough nut to crack – he’s a tsundere, an anime archetype for someone who’s abrasive at first – until you know him better.
Early access capped the number of hearts you could unlock with each villager, and players have been eagerly awaiting the extended romance arcs in the full game. Without spoiling too much, let’s just say there’s also at least once romance option who isn’t exactly human.
This lively cast of characters and love interests is ultimately what makes Fields of Mistria a standout in its genre. The town is always alive and bustling, encouraging you to spend time there – Friday nights at the Inn, where everyone gathers, being a highlight. Some of the villagers play Dungeons and Dragons, while others try out new desserts. You can ask socialite Elsie for gossip, or even join the kids in an adventuring club. There’s a real sense of place and kinship that makes playing Fields of Mistria feel like a lovely escape.
