New Delhi’s assertion got here two days after it voted in favour of a UN General Assembly resolution geared toward correcting the world map to advertise a extra correct illustration of continental landmasses.

The decision titled “Appropriate the Map: Rebalancing World Cartographic Illustration and Selling Equitable Illustration of the World’s Areas, Significantly Africa” was adopted on September 4.

Exterior Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated India highlighted that the decision doesn’t represent endorsement of any particular map, projection or depiction of nationwide boundaries.

“India voted in favour of the decision and in addition made an evidence of vote, stressing on the underlying precept of selling equal-area cartographic illustration,” he stated.

Mr. Jaiswal was responding to a media question on the problem.

Jaiswal stated the aim of the UN decision is “to encourage using equal-area map projections that protect the relative sizes of continental landmasses.”

“The decision neither adopts nor authenticates any explicit world map, nor does it handle political cartography, together with worldwide boundaries, disputed territories or place names,” he stated.

The decision, sponsored by Togo, obtained 164 votes in favour, with abstentions from Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Moldova, Serbia and Ukraine, and a lone vote towards from the US.
