NEW DELHI: The ministry of exterior affairs on Sunday mentioned India had voted in favour of a United Nations Common Meeting decision selling using equal-area world map projections. It additionally made it clear that the measure doesn’t endorse any specific map and that India’s sovereign territory have to be depicted based on its official map.The MEA mentioned the decision neither adopts nor authenticates any specific world map and doesn’t deal with political cartography, together with worldwide boundaries, disputed territories or place names.India nonetheless used its rationalization of vote to reiterate its place on Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.“India’s sovereign territory, together with the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, have to be depicted in accordance with India’s official map. The UN Common Meeting adopted the decision, titled “Appropriate the Map: Rebalancing International Cartographic Illustration and Selling Equitable Illustration of the World’s Areas, Significantly Africa”, on September 4 by a vote of 164 to at least one.The decision encourages using equal-area projections that protect the relative sizes of continental landmasses. Nevertheless, India clarified that it shouldn’t be interpreted as endorsing any particular map, projection or depiction of nationwide boundaries.“We imagine that the decision needs to be understood as supporting the broader use and consideration of equal-area map projections and never as endorsing the Equal Earth projection or every other particular map projection,” Indian diplomat Raghoo Puri mentioned whereas explaining India’s vote.
