Banihal, Aug 7: Ramban Police have arrested one person and seized a Scorpio vehicle after its driver allegedly attempted to run over police personnel at a naka on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) in the early hours of Friday.
According to an official press release, the incident occurred at around 3:52 a.m. at the Cut-off Naka, Kunfer, Chanderkote, where a police team had signalled a black Scorpio (Registration No. JK02AK-1743) to stop for routine checking after it arrived from the JP Gate Link Road.
Police said the driver allegedly ignored repeated signals, accelerated the vehicle and attempted to run over naka personnel with the intention of killing them. Sensing an imminent threat to the lives of security personnel, the guard on duty, Constable Rasal Chand, fired three warning shots from his service rifle. Despite the action, the driver and his associates managed to flee from the spot.
Following the incident, FIR No. 59/2026 under Sections 109, 132 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was registered at Police Station Chanderkote, and an investigation was launched.
A massive manhunt involving Ramban Police, Special Operations Group (SOG), CRPF and the Army was initiated to trace the accused. During the investigation, the Investigating Officer, along with the District Mobile Forensic Unit (DMFU), visited the scene and collected forensic evidence in the presence of senior officers.
During the search operation, police apprehended one of the three accused, identified as Altaf Mohammad, son of Barkat Ali, a resident of Krimchy, Mansar, Udhampur. The Scorpio used in the alleged offence has also been recovered and seized, while additional evidence has been collected by the forensic team.
Police said teams have been constituted to trace the remaining absconding accused, and assistance from Udhampur Police has been sought. Officials added that no terror angle has emerged in the investigation so far, and further investigation is in progress.
