Samsung’s AI Glasses Get ‘Recording Alert’ Feature… LED Indicator Added After South Korea’s PIPC Preemptive Regulation — BigGo Finance

South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) has required Samsung Electronics to install a mechanism that allows bystanders to recognize when its AI glasses, slated for release this year, are recording or collecting information. As AI glasses that capture and analyze the wearer’s field of view without requiring a smartphone to be pulled out gain traction, protecting the personal information of bystanders—rather than device users—has emerged as a new regulatory flashpoint.

According to government ministries and IT industry sources on Tuesday, PIPC officials met with Samsung Electronics representatives late last month to discuss privacy safeguards related to the AI glasses launch. At the meeting, the PIPC urged Samsung to apply “Privacy by Design” (PbD) principles—an approach that minimizes privacy risks from the product development stage.

The commission particularly emphasized the principle that when AI glasses record video or collect surrounding information, the other party must be able to perceive it. Measures being discussed include incorporating features such as visible lights or audible alerts on the device’s exterior to clearly signal when recording is underway.

PIPC Chairperson Song Kyung-hee told MoneyToday in a recent interview: “Products must be built in a way that protects personal information to the greatest extent possible from the outset,” adding, “It is critically important that the person interacting with someone wearing AI glasses can recognize that information is being collected.”

Samsung Electronics plans to launch its Android XR-based AI glasses, developed in partnership with Google, within this year. The company has not disclosed a specific release date. Samsung first unveiled the product—developed in collaboration with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker—at Google’s developer conference in May, and showcased additional designs and key features at its Galaxy Unpacked event on the 22nd of last month.

The AI glasses are equipped with cameras, sensors, microphones, and speakers. The device can capture what the wearer is looking at, or recognize menus, documents, and meeting scenes, with Google’s AI assistant Gemini providing translation, summarization, and navigation guidance. Users can also share their field of view in real time with others or record video from the wearer’s perspective.

These capabilities have fueled “privacy invasion” concerns even before the product’s launch. Critics point out that it is difficult for someone conversing with a person wearing camera-equipped glasses to know whether they are being recorded. This is the backdrop for the PIPC’s preemptive regulatory action ahead of the product’s release.

Samsung Electronics appears to have taken these concerns seriously, offering a technological solution. Choi Jae-in, Executive Vice President and Head of the XR Development Team at Samsung Electronics’ MX Business, said in an interview published on Samsung Newsroom on the 31st of last month: “We established privacy protection as a core principle from the early stages of development,” adding, “When recording is in progress, LED indicators on both the inside and outside of the glasses light up, and if the glasses are removed or the external LED is obscured, the recording function is automatically disabled.”

Choi added that “user voice and video data will not be used for AI model training.” This is widely interpreted as effectively incorporating the PIPC’s required “recording awareness mechanism” and “PbD principles” into the product design.

Samsung Electronics has also invested heavily in “comfortable wearability” to drive mass adoption of the AI glasses, filing 200 related patents. “With eyewear, even a 0.1mm difference can affect comfort, so we carefully reviewed weight, materials, heat generation, and battery efficiency,” Choi explained. The company applied a patented hinge structure and ultra-thin injection molding technology for a slim design, and incorporated a graphite heat-dissipation structure on the left side of the glasses to minimize application processor (AP) heat transfer to the face. Ergonomic data-driven design was used to reduce pressure on key contact points—the forehead, cheekbones, and behind the ears—while finely balancing left-right weight distribution.

Durability has also been addressed. The glasses passed rigorous testing protocols, including exposure to high temperatures, humidity, sweat, and UV radiation, as well as repeated hinge folding validation. Power efficiency was optimized to deliver up to 9 hours of use on a single charge—even with power-intensive features like Gemini usage or video recording—and the charging case provides up to 7 or more additional full charges.

Choi emphasized that intelligent eyewear will become a new entry point for mobile AI. “By leveraging the high-performance cameras, microphones, and speakers built into the frame, the device understands the context of what the user sees and hears,” he said. “From real-time interpretation and guidance to scene capture and continuous conversation, users can stay focused on the present moment and harness AI without ever pulling out their smartphone.”

Samsung Electronics has positioned the AI glasses as a “companion” device that connects with Galaxy smartphones and wearables, and has stated that the hands-free interface will support a range of third-party apps and services. “Intelligent eyewear marks the beginning of another Samsung journey to seamlessly connect AI into everyday life,” Choi said. “We will continue to set new standards for the AI glasses industry.”

While the AI glasses market is still in its early stages, competition among global tech giants is intensifying. Meta has already launched smart glasses in partnership with Ray-Ban, and Apple and Google are reportedly developing competing products. In South Korea, Samsung Electronics is effectively the only player challenging the AI glasses market.

Observers suggest that the PIPC’s preemptive regulation could become a “game changer” for the future AI glasses market. If recording notification features become mandatory, they would directly impact device design and user experience (UX). An industry insider predicted: “Privacy protection is no longer optional—it’s essential. Companies that respond proactively will gain a competitive edge in the market.”
