Sony’s latest run of PS5 disc drive consoles now comes with an ironic warning about PlayStation’s upcoming digital future.
As per Push Square, Sony’s PS5 disc drive consoles now include a notice on the box that reads:
“Important notice: from January 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PS Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on this console.”
The statement is on the box several times in different languages, and the PlayStation-focused outlet reckons this disclaimer is designed to save Sony from any potential future legal trouble.
It proves that Sony isn’t backing down from its decision to discontinue physical game disc production for all new PlayStation titles starting January 2028, even though it has received monumental backlash from fans and people have started petitions requesting Sony to reverse their decision.
Sony recently explained why it was taking the decision to cease disc production, citing the overall trend towards digitization of content, “not just for PlayStation, but for all kinds of content.”
As Push Square has noted, the data seems to be in Sony’s favour, as just seven boxed games have sold more than 100,000 copies in the US this year, compared to over 100 back in 2008.
Despite this, there has been a hefty backlash to Sony’s actions, but this doesn’t seem like something it will back down from soon.
