OpenAI Rolls Out GPT-5.6 Upgrades Across Free and Paid ChatGPT Plans

OpenAI is rolling out GPT-5.6-powered ChatGPT upgrades, bringing smarter responses, unlimited chats for free users, and new reasoning controls for paid subscribers.

OpenAI has announced a series of updates that will upgrade ChatGPT for both free and paid users, significantly expanding access to its latest AI capabilities. The changes mean even users on the free tier will gain access to more advanced intelligence than what was previously available on most everyday AI plans. According to the company, GPT-5.6 Luna will become the default ChatGPT model for all users later this week.

OpenAI claims that responses generated by GPT-5.6 Luna are 62% less likely to contain factual errors compared with the previous default model, GPT-5.5 Instant. Introduced earlier this year, Luna has been specifically designed for speed and everyday interactions. Free users, as well as subscribers to the low-cost Go plan, will receive unlimited text chats. Both Free and Go users will also gain access to a new “Think” button, allowing them to enable deeper reasoning for more complex questions.

Changes for Plus and Pro users

OpenAI is also improving GPT-5.6 Sol, its model designed for more capable everyday assistance. The updated version is better equipped to handle quick questions, web research, planning, writing, advice, and decision-making while delivering more focused responses with less unnecessary formatting, a more consistent tone, and fewer mistakes.

Additionally, Plus and Pro users will receive a new reasoning slider, allowing them to control how much time and computational effort ChatGPT spends generating an answer, depending on the complexity of the task.

The updates come as OpenAI faces growing competition from lower-cost Chinese AI models, which have increased pressure on the company and other leading AI developers to deliver more capable models at accessible price points.
