Netflix has dropped the primary trailer for East of Eden, its tackle John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel, forward of the collection premiere on October 1, 2026. The footage places Florence Pugh’s Cathy Ames proper on the heart, and Pugh performs her with a pull that’s exhausting to look away from and a streak that feels plainly harmful. East of Eden lands within the hole between Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday, which makes Netflix’s angle fairly apparent: that is the form of shiny literary drama you construct round a star individuals already need to watch.
Earlier screen versions of Steinbeck’s novel narrowed the focus. This one, a seven-episode limited series still set for October 1, 2026, is going after the whole book, including its multi-generational sprawl of family conflict, inheritance, identity, and morality. Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist, and Ciarán Hinds round out the supporting cast. Zoe Kazan writes and executive produces the series, and she also happens to be Elia Kazan’s granddaughter. She’s said she wants to adapt the complete novel and give Cathy more room, which points to a version of the character with more layers, even if it doesn’t mean softening her.
If what you want is a fuller telling of Steinbeck’s story, East of Eden looks like it could be well worth your time, even if the first round of debate is already circling one question: does giving Cathy more depth blunt the novel’s central tension over whether evil is innate, chosen, or something murkier in between?
