Ace director Sukumar has built a reputation for introducing several of his assistants as filmmakers. One of his most successful protégés, Buchi Babu Sana, made an impressive directorial debut with Uppena, which emerged as a blockbuster. The film’s success earned him the opportunity to direct the big-budget Peddi, starring Ram Charan.
Peddi carried massive pre release hype. However, the trailer received a mixed response, which impacted the film’s initial buzz and was reflected in its openings. The film eventually ended up as a disappointment, with several distributors reportedly incurring losses outside the Telugu states. It did well in the Telugu states, thanks to Ram Charan’s star power and decent talk among the Telugu audience. Despite the buzz and hype, Peddi failed to deliver at the ticket windows.
Now, attention has shifted to another of Sukumar’s prominent assistants, Srikanth Odela. His directorial debut, Dasara, starring Nani, was both a commercial and critical success. Naturally, expectations are sky-high for his second film, The Paradise, once again featuring Nani.
The hype surrounding The Paradise was immense, but the recently released teaser has drawn mixed reactions from a section of the audience. While many appreciated its technical brilliance and visual presentation, some viewers found its style and treatment less accessible on the first watch. Even a section of Nani’s fans felt the teaser demanded multiple viewings to fully appreciate its intent.
Unlike Peddi, Srikanth Odela still has an opportunity to regain the film’s momentum, with the trailer yet to be released. Delivering a powerful and universally appealing trailer could help restore the excitement, connect with a wider audience, and strike the right chord ahead of the film’s release. Peddi lesson for The Paradise is the need of the hour.
