A container ship was hit by a missile within the Gulf of Oman, off the coast of Pakistan, information company Reuters reported on Tuesday citing maritime safety sources.
The Gulf of Oman borders the southwestern coast of Pakistan, and hyperlinks the Arabian Sea to the Strait of Hormuz, serving as a crucial maritime and strategic waterway close to key Pakistani ports like Gwadar.
The Panama-flagged container ship Vela Nova was believed to have been hit when crusing some 71 nautical miles off Pakistan’s coast, British maritime threat administration group Vanguard and a maritime safety supply mentioned individually to information company Reuters.
The UK Maritime Commerce Operations (UKMTO) reported that on August 11, 2026, at 0715 UTC, it obtained a report of an “incident involving a container ship and navy forces” within the Gulf of Oman. The British company didn’t establish the navy power concerned, the vessel’s title or flag, or the character of the incident, and mentioned authorities are conscious and that investigations are ongoing. It suggested vessels to stay alert to the evolving safety scenario within the area.
The UKMTO, run out of Bahrain, screens and points safety advisories for industrial delivery within the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, Gulf of Oman, and the broader Indian Ocean area.
Elsewhere within the area, at the very least three crew members had been killed after a deck cargo ship was attacked by Yemen’s Iran-aligned insurgent group the Houthis within the Bab el-Mandeb Strait within the Purple Sea. Amongst these killed are two Pakistanis and an Indonesian nationwide, in response to The Jerusalem Submit.
Maritime safety sources informed Reuters a cargo ship was believed to have been focused within the Purple Sea.
