Producer Preeti Simoes has opened up about being repeatedly identified as comedian Kapil Sharma’s ‘ex-girlfriend’. In a recent interview, she mentioned that such labels often overshadow a woman’s own professional identity. Simoes spoke about how headlines continued to define her through her alleged past relationship with Sharma, even after the two had moved on with their separate lives.
Simoes, who was the creative force behind Comedy Nights with Kapil and The Kapil Sharma Show, said she spent a long time being referred to primarily as “somebody’s girlfriend” rather than being recognised for her own work.
“For the longest time, I was somebody’s girlfriend. Then, after we broke up and moved on with our separate lives, I became somebody’s ex-girlfriend in every headline. It had nothing to do with what I do. It was always ‘so-and-so’s ex-girlfriend’ or ‘so-and-so’s girlfriend.’ I don’t think the audience is really interested in that. I think it’s a section of the media that believes people will click only when you’re connected to a famous name,” she told Free Press Journal.
Simoes further expressed frustration over how people outside a relationship tend to make assumptions about the equation between two people. She explained that former partners can remain friends or maintain a cordial relationship, but many people still assure that the reason behind breakup must be the woman.
“It’s very frustrating because nobody really knows what’s happening between two people. They could be very happy being friends, or they could simply be cordial with each other in a professional space. But the labels of ‘girlfriend’ and ‘ex-girlfriend’ continue forever. And if it’s a woman, the assumption is always, ‘She must have done something,’” she added.
For the unversed, Preeti Simoes is a TV show producer associated with shows like Aakhri Sach, Dil Diyan Gallan, Comedy Nights with Kapil, The Kapil Sharma Show, Kanpurwale Khuranas, Gangs of Filmistaan and Sunita Ahuja’s show on YouTube.
On the other hand, Kapil Sharma married Ginni Chatrath, in December 2018. They have two children, a daughter named Anayra and a son named Trishaan.
