Heavy pre-dawn rain and thunder woke up Gurgaon residents, with light showers continuing through morning. Power cuts hit many areas, reviving fears of a repeat of Tuesday’s chaos.

Gurgaon Rains: Some residents said they had already decided to work from home rather than risk the commute.

Gurgaon residents were jolted awake by thunder and heavy rainfall in the early hours, with light showers continuing through the morning. Several residents reported power outages lasting over two hours in their localities, reviving fears of a repeat of the waterlogging and gridlock that paralysed the city earlier this week.

Discussions on social media platform Reddit captured the mood as the rain continued. “It’s been raining since 2 hours,” one user wrote around two hours after the initial post, while another flagged a power outage in their area for the same duration.

Several residents debated whether the rain — welcomed by some after days of humidity — would translate into fresh commuting trouble, with one user predicting roads would resemble “a river.”

Some said they had already decided to work from home rather than risk the commute, with one user writing they would only head to office on Monday.

Why Are Residents Worried About A Repeat Of Tuesday?

The anxiety stems from Tuesday’s back-to-back disruptions. A roughly 25-foot section of the slab over the three-decade-old Leg-1 master stormwater drain near Rotary Public School on Sushil Aima Marg caved in after heavy rain, also damaging the drain’s retaining wall and triggering soil erosion beneath the adjoining service road, according to a Times of India report.

No injuries were reported, though some vendors said a kiosk was swept away in the flow; GMDA has since barricaded the affected stretch. The report noted the drain, transferred from HSVP to GMDA in 2018, has seen recurring structural issues, including a cave-in near Tau Devi Lal Park in September 2023.

Have Schools Been Affected?

At least two schools — Matrikiran and Lotus Valley International School — have shifted to online classes for the day in view of the rain and waterlogging concerns.

Did Tuesday’s Rain Also Disrupt Traffic?

Yes — commuters were stranded for nearly three hours on Tuesday evening as showers, waterlogging and kanwar yatra diversions combined to choke the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, Gurgaon-Sohna highway and the Ambience Mall underpass.

According to the TOI report, waterlogging near Dwarka tunnel and at hotspots including Udyog Vihar, Cyber City, Shankar Chowk, MG Road and IFFCO Chowk led to a citywide gridlock, with some commuters describing journeys of over an hour for stretches that normally take five minutes. Cab fares also surged during the rush, the report added.

Has Traffic Been Affected Today As Well?

Gurugram Traffic Police said breakdown buses were swiftly cleared from roads to ensure smooth traffic flow and minimise inconvenience to commuters, in a post on X. “Your safety and seamless journey remain our top priority,” the force said, as authorities moved to pre-empt a repeat of Tuesday’s hours-long snarls.

Is More Rain On The Way?

Independent weather tracker Navdeep Dahiya, in a 7:10 am update on X, said heavy rain had occurred over most parts of Gurgaon in the early morning, with light to moderate showers expected to continue across the city over the next few hours and waterlogging likely to persist.

He added that Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad could also see light to moderate showers through the first half of the day, with isolated pockets receiving slightly heavier spells.
