Former WWE champion returns from injury at SummerSlam

Ahead of the opening match of SummerSlam Sunday, Nick Aldis stepped out onto the stage to announce that he was adding to the match between Finn Balor and Sami Zayn.

The SmackDown GM proceeded to add Gunther to the No. 1 Contender’s Match, but stated he wasn’t making this a Triple Threat…but rather, a Fatal Four-Way Match, with Kevin Owens making his return to the company to a big pop from the crowd.

The former WWE Champion was out for well over a year, sidelined with a neck injury prior to WrestleMania 41 that saw him undergo surgery.

Owens would go on to win the bout as recapped by Roy Nemer in his live coverage of the show, becoming the new No. 1 Contender for the Undisputed WWE Championship held by CM Punk after a successful defense at SummerSlam Saturday over Cody Rhodes.
