When I first watched The Devil Wears Prada, I admit I saw it as preparation for the industry I wanted to work in. Although the media landscape had changed significantly from what we had seen in the cult film by the time I was old enough and ready to enter it, I still believe the film played a major role in shaping my understanding of the industry. Even then, I learned perhaps its most important lesson: that we should always push our own boundaries and strive to go beyond what we believe is our maximum. The Devil Wears Prada 2, whose premiere I attended with my colleagues, offered a different perspective. It was honest and true to the time in which it was made. From relationships with brands and a marketing landscape more developed than ever to the complexities of publishing that define the industry today, I left the cinema feeling that, through fiction, the film had managed to capture at least some of what is happening in the media today. Although you are unlikely to see most members of the editorial team wearing Gabriela Hearst dresses or Valentino heels on a Monday morning, but rather white T-shirts, dark circles down to the floor and dozens of unanswered emails, the film’s message was clear: the media have changed, but they still manage to give us the same thrill they did in the early 2000s.

I could analyse the influence of these films every day because I believe they play an important role in shaping everyone who aspires to build a career in the fashion industry and the media as a whole. This time, the reason for revisiting them is an auction of the pieces that left a particular mark on both films. Yes, you read that correctly: garments from The Devil Wears Prada 2, along with selected designs from the film shot in 2006, are heading to auction soon and, if you are lucky enough, they could find a place in your wardrobe.

Christie’s is organising an auction dedicated to The Devil Wears Prada 2, featuring pieces worth more than $1 million, from clothing and jewellery to bags and shoes worn by the film’s stars. The auction will be available online from September 1, while the event is scheduled for September 15, 2026. Among the most exciting pieces going under the hammer is the cerulean-blue J.Crew sweater from the first film, which Meryl Streep wore during an appearance on Stephen Colbert’s show as part of the press tour for The Devil Wears Prada 2. Alongside this iconic piece, collectors will also have the opportunity to bid on garments worn by Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci, Simone Ashley and Lucy Liu in the sequel to the beloved film, including a striking Dries Van Noten blazer, a Dolce & Gabbana corset, skirt and sunglasses, a Fendi bag, a Schiaparelli dress and many other pieces. Lady Gaga’s hooded velvet-and-feather dress, which the musician wore in the music video for Runway, is also certain to attract particular attention.

I don’t know about you, but I will certainly be trying to secure the cerulean-blue sweater, although I am very unlikely to succeed.
