The murder of a 29-year-old private school teacher in Haryana’s Faridabad on Monday was meticulously planned nearly two months in advance. The accused purchased the knife specifically to carry out the killing and was waiting for the right opportunity to strike, police said on Wednesday.
During interrogation, 21-year-old Amit told investigators he had been planning to kill Sandhya Sharma for around two months and had abandoned an earlier plan to attack her while she was travelling to or from school because he feared being caught. Instead, he decided to carry out the attack inside the school premises, police said.
Sandhya Sharma was stabbed more than 27 times in the neck and chest on Monday, dying on the spot. A video of the attack later surfaced on social media.
According to investigators, the attacker had feelings for Sandhya, but she did not reciprocate. Police said she had earlier filed a molestation complaint against him, after which he apologised.
However, he harboured resentment after she changed both her workplace and residence.
Police said Amit reached the private school in Sikrona village at around 9.30 am on Monday and lured her out of her classroom by using her husband’s name. As she stepped outside, he grabbed her by the hair and repeatedly stabbed her, killing her on the spot.
“The accused was so enraged that he continued attacking even after the knife bent,” a senior police officer said, adding that the murder weapon had been recovered and efforts were underway to seize the accused’s motorcycle and clothes.
The attack was captured on the school’s CCTV cameras. Police also said Amit threatened a staff member who attempted to intervene.
The accused, a resident of Faridabad’s Kot village, was arrested within two hours of the incident. A Faridabad court remanded him to three days’ police custody on Tuesday.
Sandhya Sharma’s husband, Vicky Gurjar, said the victim had met the attacker at her previous workplace and demanded stricter action by police saying that the earlier molestation complaint could have prevented the murder.
“If the police had acted strictly then, Sandhya might have been alive today,” he said.
The couple, who had a love marriage, are survived by their two children: a seven-year-old son and a five-year-old daughter. Police said Amit is unemployed and earns a living by rearing buffaloes and selling milk. The investigation is ongoing.
