Aston Villa 1-2 FC Bayern: Initial Observations and Reactions

Luis Díaz was ruthless. He gave no indication that he would be treating this match as a friendly and gave his full effort when most veterans might have slacked off. His goal was a booming strike.
Despite being given plenty of opportunities this preseason, Arijon Ibrahimović had another lackluster performance. At 20 years old, he just doesn’t possess any of the elite skills that coaches desire in an attacker. He still has plenty of time to develop at a midtable Bundesliga club but it would be surprising to see him stick with Bayern.
On the flip side, Kim Min-jae had a solid streak of games and will continue to play valuable minutes in the three-man rotation at center-back. This will be crucial to keeping Dayot Upamecano fresh throughout the season.
Sacha Boey played well enough to earn himself a decent transfer or loan deal, but not well enough to keep his spot on Bayern’s squad. João Palhinha will need to make some sort of financial concession if he wants to make a move as he was a statue on the pitch for nearly 30 minutes, registering a meager 10 touches and adding only one defensive contribution.
Despite the World Cup snub, Tom Bischof polished off the summer with another outstanding performance, essentially naming himself Bayern’s MVP of the preseason. He delivered a variety of dangerous free kicks (including that beautiful assist to Kim Min-jae), added seven defensive contributions, and maintained a 93% passing accuracy.

After the pair of wins on the Asia tour, Bayern will be back in action next weekend in the Telekom Cup against RB Leipzig, boasting the full power of the squad.

76’: Substitution. Filip Pavić and Bastian Assomo replace Jonathan Tah and Nathaniel Brown.

73’: GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 2-0. Luis Díaz powers in a shot from the left wing.

71’: Luis Díaz fires a shot from inside the box but the defender stayed on the post to make the goal line clearance.

69’: Tom Bischof goes near post on a free kick from a tight angle but the keeper flies across the net to cover it.

67’: Substitutions. Tyrone Mings and Luka Lynch replace Pau Torres and Evann Guessand.

63’: Substitutions. Hiroki Itō, Luis Díaz, and João Palhinha replace Kim Min-jae, Maycon Cardozo, and Aleksandar Pavlović.

59’: Substitution. Tammy Abraham and Lamare Bogare replace Boubacar Kamara and Brian Madjo.

46’: Substitutions. Josip Stanišić replaces Konrad Laimer.

Overall, Bayern moved the ball well despite a slow, patchy pitch. Aston Villa did not do much as a unit, focuusing more on winning individual battles.
Tim Binder’s dribbling and creativity might be more brazen than Lennart Karl but Karl’s situational awareness is more valuable.
Konrad Laimer is not the natural number nine that he probably thinks he is.
Aleksandar Pavlović looked confident and active, both on and off the ball. Maybe he was just a bad style fit with Julian Nagelsmann.
Maycon Cardozo needs more minutes to grow but he continues to show a lot of promise.
It sounds like a broken record but bears repeating: Tom Bischof is the truth and the crystal clear future of the midfield for both Bayern and Germany.

37’: GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 1-0. Tom Bischof whipped in a beautiful free kick for Kim Min-jae to score with a glancing header. Pure class from both players.

29’: Tom Bischof hits a curler from outside the box that sails barely wide. The keeper was completely beaten and he knew it.

26’: Yellow card. Maycon Cardozo is booked for a foul.

26’: Aleksandar Pavlović uses some nifty dribbling to fire a shot from the top of the box. The shot was parried away by Marco Bizot.

Bayern Munich once again opts for a mixed lineup:

On Tuesday, Bayern Munich snuck past South Korea’s Jeju side with a 2-1 victory. Bayern will play the final friendly of the Asian preseason tour against Aston Villa from the Premier League. Aston Villa also qualified for the 2026/27 Champions League by finishing fourth in the table last season.

Bayern is rumored to be negotiating with Aston Villa over midfielder João Palhinha. Bayern is holding firm at the asking price of €25M and will use this match to convince Aston Villa to complete the move that benefits all parties involved.

Bayern wins 2-1. Bayern will explode out of the gates with two goals in the first 20 minutes. Bastian Assomo will power his way through the box and score then Tom Bischof will set up Tim Binder perfectly for a pass across to an unmarked Arijon Ibrahimović. Aston Villa will score on a set piece in the second half but have very few other opportunities as Bayern dominates possession.
