Protesting college students burnt the effigies of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on the twenty third day of their protest at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium in Ranchi, alleging that the State Authorities was not critical about their demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into alleged irregularities in aggressive exams for presidency jobs.

Past Ranchi, effigies have been additionally burnt in different districts, with college students shouting slogans towards the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-led authorities and towards the Congress, which had reportedly promised to withdraw help to the State authorities if it didn’t handle their calls for by Independence Day.

Ravindra Paswan, the chief of the JPSC-JSSC Reform Manch, mentioned that when the scholars’ agitation started, Mr. Gandhi, the Chief of the Opposition within the Lok Sabha, had assured them that if Mr. Soren didn’t take any optimistic steps concerning their calls for or present a passable response by August 15, the Congress would withdraw its help to the JMM-led authorities. Nevertheless, even after August 15, the federal government has not taken any concrete steps to handle their calls for, Mr. Paswan mentioned.
“We have now already introduced that if the federal government doesn’t take heed to our calls for by August 18, we are going to gherao the CM’s residence on August 20. We have now no different possibility left,” the protest chief mentioned.
Proposal for talks
Kumar Rajat, the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Ranchi Sadar, and Dhananjay Kumar, Extra District Justice of the Peace (ADM), Regulation and Order, each met the protesting college students on the website within the night with the federal government’s proposals.
Mr. Rajat confirmed in a WhatsApp message to The Hindu that college students have been invited by the federal government to carry talks between 2 p.m. and three p.m. on Monday (August 17, 2026), on the State visitor home in Ranchi.
