Google has released a major update to the Ask Maps feature in Google Maps – users will be able to order food, track real-time transportation information, and more.
Ask Maps will now be able to perform complex, multi-step tasks using new agent capabilities. This will, for example, allow users to order takeout from restaurants with a simple request. Ask Maps will then find nearby restaurants that are open and serve what the user wants, and can even accommodate specific dietary needs.
Once a restaurant is selected, the agent will automatically add the dish to the cart so users can confirm their order. This feature is currently rolling out with partners like Square and Toast, and will soon be available on Uber Eats.
Ask Maps can also provide up-to-date information about hotels and local events. For example, you can ask the agent to find a hotel near a gym and a restaurant, and it will compare prices and availability to provide the best results.
With Personal Intelligence, users will also be able to connect Ask Maps to Gmail, and eventually to other Google apps like Calendar. The agent-based AI will automatically take into account your upcoming flight or dinner reservations, giving you relevant suggestions without you having to explain your current plans. Ask Maps can also remember previous conversations, for example, to remind you of suggested activities during your trip.
Another innovation is the ability to check public transport information in real time. A new widget, available directly in Ask Maps, will inform users about bus, train or metro delays.
In addition, Google is making it easier to share updates in Maps. Users will be able to suggest changes in the Ask Maps conversation and in the Contribute tab, as well as send photos, for example, of a new store sign, so that the service can update opening hours.
A real-time transit widget, more personalized answers, and remembering past conversations in Ask Maps are now available wherever Ask Maps is available. Ordering food, finding hotels and events, and joining conversations are available now in the US, and will be coming to other regions over time.
