Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has addressed the growing speculation surrounding a possible Indian Premier League (IPL) appearance, saying he is yet to decide whether he will enter the competition despite now being eligible to do so following his acquisition of British citizenship.
Speaking on the sidelines of The Hundred, where he is representing Trent Rockets as a domestic player, Amir confirmed that he will feature in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) as an overseas player from the 2027 season but remained non-committal about the IPL.
“I will play in the PSL in 2027 as an overseas player. As for the IPL, I don’t know yet whether I will participate,” Amir said.
The 34-year-old has entered a new phase of his franchise career after becoming a British citizen, a move that has significantly altered his eligibility in domestic T20 competitions.
Amir recently joined Nottinghamshire’s Notts Outlaws for the T20 Blast as a local player and was later signed by Trent Rockets in The Hundred in the same capacity, meaning he no longer occupies an overseas slot in English domestic cricket.
BRITISH CITIZENSHIP OPENS NEW DOORS FOR AMIR
Amir obtained British citizenship through his wife, Narjis Khan, who is a British national. Having fulfilled the residency and legal requirements, the former Pakistan left-arm pacer is now eligible to register as a British overseas player in franchise leagues around the world, including the IPL.
While his status has opened the door to the IPL, Amir has made it clear that no decision has been taken yet. His immediate focus remains on franchise cricket in England before returning to Pakistan’s premier T20 competition, where he will now be classified as an overseas player rather than a domestic one because of his British citizenship.
Amir retired from international cricket after the 2024 T20 World Cup, bringing the curtain down on a Pakistan career that included 36 Tests, 61 ODIs and 62 T20Is. Widely regarded as one of the most skilful left-arm fast bowlers of his generation, he remains a sought-after name on the global franchise circuit.
