Ireland v Afghanistan: First ODI at Bready washed out

The first one-day international between Ireland and Afghanistan at Bready was abandoned without a ball bowled because of rain.

Play was due to begin at 10:45 BST but, after persistent wet weather at the County Tyrone ground, the toss was delayed and a pitch inspection called for 12:00.

What was to be new head coach Gary Wilson’s first game in charge of Ireland, and his side’s first 50-over fixture since May 2025, was abandoned at 12:27.

The second ODI of the five-game series is scheduled to take place at Bready on Friday before the teams head to Stormont in Belfast for the last three matches.

Ireland are hosting the series despite what CEO Sarah Keane called “moral discomfort” over the treatment of women in Afghanistan.
