Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed officials to ensure all metro rail projects across the state are completed within three years from the start of construction.
The directive came during a Cabinet Infrastructure Committee meeting on Tuesday, where the government outlined plans to operationalise more than 300 km of new metro lines by 2029-30, taking the total planned and operational network to 683.53 km.
Currently, 174 km of metro corridors are operational across Maharashtra, whilst 291 km remain under construction. Another 130 km of routes are awaiting approval, and detailed project reports are being prepared for an additional 87.15 km of corridors.
Metro projects worth Rs 2.81 lakh crore are at various stages of implementation, with the Centre contributing Rs 27,216 crore and the state government providing Rs 50,250 crore directly.
The expansion programme targets completion of 87 km of metro lines and 56 stations during the current year. By 2029-30, another 302 km of corridors and 161 stations are planned to become operational.
The Chief Minister emphasised that the metro expansion in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region would strengthen safe, fast and environment-friendly public transport whilst supporting future urban growth.
The committee also reviewed the proposed Metro Line-10 connecting Mira Gaon and Gaimukh in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The 9.68 km elevated corridor with five stations, estimated to cost Rs 8,500 crore, has reached the final stages of planning and regulatory approvals.
Chief Minister Fadnavis instructed officials to implement necessary measures to complete Metro-10 within the three-year deadline.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s metro network recently achieved a milestone of 30 crore passengers.
The remaining funds for metro projects will be mobilised through the MMRDA, local bodies and planning authorities, with the balance to be raised through government-guaranteed borrowings.
