Srinagar, Aug 06: The Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday distanced itself from the objectionable slogans raised during a rally at Housing Colony in Anantnag, saying the remarks did not reflect the party’s ideology or the purpose of the event.
In a statement issued on the directions of BJP General Secretary (Organisation) Ashok Koul, party spokesperson Altaf Thakur said the BJP does not endorse defamatory or derogatory remarks against any individual and remains committed to upholding the dignity of women.
“Our party has always upheld the dignity and honour of women. The BJP has been at the forefront of women’s empowerment, and the historic decision to provide 33 per cent reservation for women reflects that commitment,” Thakur said.
He said the slogans allegedly raised by a few individuals during the rally were their personal expressions and should not be construed as the BJP’s official position.
“Some individuals may have raised slogans based on their personal thinking or emotions, but those slogans do not represent the BJP’s official stand or the views of the leaders who led the rally. The party does not endorse any defamatory or derogatory remarks against anyone,” he said.
Thakur reiterated that the BJP believes in maintaining political decorum and issue-based politics, adding that its public conduct is guided by democratic principles and constitutional values.
The spokesperson said the party continues to stand by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of women’s empowerment, citing the Women’s Reservation Act providing 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies as evidence of the BJP’s commitment to increasing women’s participation in public life.
The clarification came after videos circulating on social media purportedly showed some participants at the Anantnag Housing Colony rally raising objectionable slogans. The BJP said such remarks should not be attributed to the party as an organisation.
The party also reiterated its commitment to promoting the social, political and economic empowerment of women and said it would continue to support initiatives aimed at strengthening their role in public life.
