Grand Theft Auto 6 is a uniquely high-budget game, but even so I was surprised to read today that Rockstar is debuting an “extended look” video on Netflix to subscribers only. The preview goes live to the general populace on YouTube six hours later.
The video preview, which arrives on August 27th at 3PM ET (8PM UK time), promises a longer look at “the next evolution in the groundbreaking ‘Grand Theft Auto’ series.” This is the first time that a game trailer has debuted on Netflix.
Amusingly, the Netflix listing is tagged with “Crime Films” and “Action & Adventure Films” in terms of genre, while the content is described as “Slick, Rousing, Adventure, High-Octane, Imaginative, Cars, Action Thriller, Movie”. So – a 90 minute feature film then?
“Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right. The anticipation and fandom around Grand Theft Auto VI is unprecedented, and we’re honored that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first,” says the Netflix blog – in a quote attributed to Netflix vice president Brandon Riegg.
The last we heard about GTA 6 came when pre-orders went live, where we analysed 63 new screenshots added to the site. We also had a lively debate about the possibility for supra-30fps gameplay. The game is still set to release on 19th November, just over 100 days away.
