On this day in space! Aug. 31, 1965: NASA’s ginormous Super Guppy carrier plane takes 1st flight like a flying whale

On August 31, 1965, NASA’s Super Guppy cargo airplane took its first take a look at flight.

This outsized plane seems to be a bit like an enormous flying whale. It was constructed by an organization known as Aero Spacelines and based mostly on the Boeing B-377 Stratocruiser. NASA makes use of these funny-looking planes to move massive cargo, like spacecraft elements and different smaller plane. (See the Super Guppy swallow a T-38 supersonic jet!) On the time, they wanted the planes to move Apollo program rocket levels from California to Florida.
