Might 12, 1989. Mani Ratnam’s Telugu movie Geethanjali was launched quite quietly. It took time for the love story starring Nagarjuna Akkineni and Girija, with haunting music by Ilaiyaraaja, to turn out to be a rage throughout erstwhile Andhra Pradesh. It stays some of the memorable love tales in Telugu cinema. Its Tamil dubbed model Idhayathai Thirudathey was equally phenomenal on the field workplace in Tamil Nadu. Thirty seven years later, the digitally restored movie will re-release in 4K format in Telugu and Tamil on August 28, 2026.

Geethanjali is titled after its feminine protagonist (performed by Girija) whose zest for all times belies the truth that her days are most likely numbered. She is grappling with a terminal coronary heart situation. The story follows her journey and that of Prakash (Nagarjuna), a school graduate identified with power myeloid leukemia. When the 2 cross paths, a relationship blossoms amid questions of life and demise and the craving to have fun every day.
