The Supreme Court agreed on Monday (August 3, 2026) to urgently list a petition filed by a retired Air Force officer seeking accountability of the “organisers” of the NEET-UG protests for the July 20 violence in the national capital.

A counsel making an oral mentioning before Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said the organisers, instead of “dousing the fire were fanning the fire” further since July 20.

The counsel said the “young boys and girls” were using abusive language and posting the videos on social media.

He said the “young boys and girls” should be asked to do seven days of community service. He urged the court to direct the authorities against the registration of FIRs though.

The lawyer for the retired officer orally mentioned how different State governments were issuing separate, often contradictory, notifications on the manner in which action should be taken against the protesters. He said the protests had had a national impact, and must be heard by the Supreme Court itself.

“We will hear the petition tomorrow, or most probably, the day after,” Chief Justice Kant said.
