Astronomers discover a giant, rocky ‘mega-Earth’ 23 times more massive than our planet

Astronomers have found an unusually large, dense exoplanet that challenges typical concepts about how rocky planets type.

Known as GJ 523b, the exoplanet is about 2.5 instances wider than Earth however packs roughly 23 instances our planet’s mass into that comparatively compact dimension. Worlds this huge and dense are typically known as “mega-Earths,” a casual time period for unusually large, predominantly rocky planets.
