Sony India managing director Sunil Nayyar has addressed the PS5 shortage in the country in an interview with The Economic Times, saying stocks will return but declining to say when. The comments arrive at a point where the console is both hard to find and considerably more expensive than it was a few months ago.
What The Sony India MD Said
Nayyar acknowledged that the company has not been able to bring in enough units. “I would like to actually apologise to our fans, that we never want this kind of situation to develop, but it does happen,” he said, adding that Sony India has been unable to get enough inventory or stocks into the market because of circumstances it does not control.
Asked about the timeline, he offered no date. “I can’t say very specific things right now, or when ample stocks will be available. But stocks will be there,” he said in the interview. He described the cause as external to the company and said the situation is being closely watched, ending with the hope that Sony would not disappoint buyers.

The Console Is Also Rs 15,000 More Expensive
What the interview does not address is price. The PS5 Standard Edition is now listed at Rs 69,990 on Sony’s ShopAtSC store up from Rs 54,990, an increase of about 28 percent. Set against the Rs 49,990 the console launched at in India in early 2021, buyers are being asked to pay roughly Rs 20,000 more for hardware that first went on sale globally in 2020. Sony has attributed the global hikes to the memory shortage and wider economic conditions, and the same explanation covers India.
The Digital Edition has not received a confirmed revised price and is not currently listed on the official storefront. Its last increase, from Rs 44,990 to Rs 49,990, came in July 2025.
Buyers Have No Way Around The Price
2026 is shaping up to be an excellent year for gamers. Marvel’s Wolverine lands as a PS5 exclusive, and GTA 6 arrives on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S with no PC version announced. Both of the year’s biggest releases are locked to a console, so anyone who wants to play them has to buy the hardware first, and in India that means Rs 69,990 for a machine that has been on sale since 2020. Xbox is not a cheaper way out either, since Microsoft has raised its console prices worldwide over the same memory costs, and the Series X|S route only covers one of the two games. That leaves PS5 buyers waiting on stock Sony has not put a date on, at a price the company has not indicated will come back down.
