A spacecraft is on its way to study Jupiter’s moon for signs of life in water plumes – but they might not even be there

The scientists who helped discover probably the most intriguing options of Jupiter’s moon Europa – big plumes of water vapour erupting from its floor – are actually much less satisfied of their 2014 discovery.

Researchers on the Southwest Analysis Institute in San Antonio, Texas, reviewed 14 years of observations and concluded that many detections of Europa’s plumes could be defined by different phenomena. 

Europa has lengthy fascinated scientists due to the worldwide ocean believed to exist beneath its frozen crust.

Since 2012, a number of research utilizing the Hubble House Telescope have reported potential water vapour rising a whole lot of kilometres above the floor.

It was thought such plumes may present a direct window into the moon’s subsurface ocean.

Related plumes at Saturn’s moon Enceladus had been investigated by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft throughout its mission, revealing organic molecules – the key ingredients of life – were present in Enceladus’s subsurface ocean.

It is hoped that related explorations by spacecraft at Europa may show simply as fruitful.

Nonetheless, this new examine discovered that most of the observations of Europa’s suspected plumes are tough to breed and infrequently depend on oblique measurements.

The researchers argue different explanations reminiscent of charged-particle interactions, observational limitations and data-processing results might account for a number of plume detections.

The examine doesn’t rule out the likelihood that plumes exist. As an alternative, it means that they might be much less frequent, smaller or harder to detect than beforehand assumed.
