A ship operator was fined 50,000 Norwegian kroner (Rs 4.5 lakh) for waking up a polar bear with the ship’s horn close to the North Pole earlier this month.
Whereas passing by means of a sea inlet off the coast of Svalbard, the vacationer onboard the ship noticed the polar bear resting. As they wished to see the animal transfer, the operator intentionally sounded the horn. The loud noise startled the bear because it awakened and fled the shore.
After being knowledgeable of the incident, Lars Fause, the Governor of Svalbard, took authorized motion in opposition to the ship operator. In response to a report by the British Broadcasting Company, Fause stated, “Its occupants are stated to have noticed a polar bear sleeping on land. An individual on board then used the ship’s foghorn, waking the animal, which moved to a different location.”
In response to the Svalbard Environmental Safety Act, it’s strictly unlawful to needlessly disturb, pursue, or appeal to polar bears. The governor didn’t reveal the title of the offender.
