Most 18-year-olds are busy choosing a university or settling into their first semester. Nathan Thomas was standing at the front of a classroom, teaching engineering students.
The Florida teen has entered the Guinness World Records after becoming the world’s youngest male professor at 18 years and 346 days, breaking a record that had remained untouched for 306 years. He joined Miami Dade College as an engineering instructor, teaching students who, in many cases, are almost the same age as him.
His achievement surpassed the record set by Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin, who became a professor at the age of 19 in 1717.
A JOURNEY THAT BEGAN AT JUST 10
Nathan’s academic journey started much earlier than most.
At the age of 10, he enrolled in Miami Dade College through a dual-enrolment programme while continuing his school education.
By 14, he had moved to Florida International University, where he completed both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering with honours.
Years later, he returned to the same college where he had once been a child student. This time, he came back as a faculty member.
In August 2023, he began teaching COP 2270: C for Engineers, a course that introduces engineering students to C programming and computational problem-solving.
WHEN AGE BECOMES JUST A NUMBER
Teaching students who are close to his own age has never bothered Nathan.
He believes that learning is not determined by age but by curiosity and commitment. According to him, everyone enters the classroom for the same reason, to learn, improve and grow.
For Nathan, the most satisfying part of teaching is watching students understand concepts that once seemed difficult.
Growing up in a family of engineers also played a major role in shaping his interests. He has often credited his mother for making mathematics enjoyable and helping him develop a strong foundation in science from an early age.
AN ENGINEER TODAY, A LAWYER TOMORROW
Nathan’s ambitions extend well beyond engineering.
Alongside teaching, he is pursuing a Juris Doctor degree at the University of Miami School of Law, with graduation expected in 2028.
His goal is to specialise in intellectual property law, combining his engineering background with legal expertise to help protect innovations in science and technology.
He believes the logical thinking and problem-solving skills developed through engineering have proved equally valuable in studying law.
