New ‘magnetoelastic’ tent generates electricity from wind, body movement and sound to power small devices

Researchers have developed a tent that harvests vitality from its personal movement ‪—‬ a course of that would sooner or later energy small gadgets in shelters, catastrophe zones and off-grid camps.

The important thing lies in a cloth property referred to as “magnetoelasticity,” which turns bending and stretching movement into electrical vitality. Magnetoelasticity, first described in 1865 by physicist Emilio Villari, is the change in a cloth’s magnetic flux density when mechanical stress is utilized within the presence of an exterior magnetic area.
